  • Beijing Cuts Telephone Installation Fee
  • March 4, 1999 (BEIJING) -- The cost of installing a telephone in Beijing was cut recently from RMB3,600 (US$430) to RMB1,000, as approved by the municipal government.
There will be no charge to install a second line or additional phone lines in a single family, according to the regulation.

On the first day of the new policy, many people joined a long line in front of the Beijing Municipal Telephone Office to apply for telephone installation.

There are now an average of 48 telephones for every 100 residents in the Chinese capital.
